How did you first hear about Iboga?

To me this is very interesting as maybe more than anything else I felt called to Iboga.  First while using my good old scizzers for a good odd 24 hours straight, you can guess what, I decided to take a break to listen to my favorite radio program, "This American Life".  The only program other than "Radio Lab" that I listen to on the radio.  On came this guy named Dmitri.  You all might have heard it already, let's just say I was obsessed with it from the time I heard about it.  http://www.thisamericanlife.org/play_full.php?play=321&act=2     Act Two. I'm Not A Doctor But I Play One At The Holiday Inn. A former heroin addict realizes that he wants to help other addicts kick their habits. The problem is, he wants to do this using a hallucinogenic drug – ibogaine – that is completely illegal, and which requires medical expertise he doesn't have. Lu Olkowski and Trey Kay reported this story, which is narrated by Lu. (16 minutes) Then maybe a year later I was in a random bookstore look down and see this book... Iboga: The Visionary Root of African Shamanism http://www.amazon.com/Iboga-Visionary-Root-African-Shamanism/dp/1594771766/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1332365021&sr=1-1 And that was all (s)he wrote.

i was reading google news headlines when i stumbled upon a headline about howard lotsof being honoured for his lifework in treating drug addicts. i read on and found to my disbelief that there exists a drug that can cure heroin addiction. however, a quick search brought me to the testimonials on youtube and elsewhere and after watching/reading a couple of this it was one line that came up a couple of times which was my call - it was when people said that for the first time in their life they had no fear at all - that was it, i new in my gut, iboga was for me!

i was at a pot festival in atlanta , georgia . the year was 1992 . The black crows and cypress hill played that day .   http://youtu.be/7GTRqG62Q_E   : this video was filmed that day ! someone whom i now think was dana beal or howard lostof came out on stage before cyprus hill came on and talked about Ibogaine . he said " the cure for addiction is out there and they arent telling you about it " , he said it was called " IBOGAINE" . he made this crowd of like 50,000 people (largest pot rally in international history !) say it five times in a row with him . i never forgot it from that day on , though i never looked into it untill a near fatal overdose landed me in the ER in 2008 . what a long , strange trip its been .

Great thread! I rememeber reading Eric Taub's ibeginagain online spot in the early 2000's...I had been just getting in to plant teachers, and learning how to use these things for reasons other than fun and abject terror. During this time in my life I was at a methadone clinic and was sick of the ball and chain. I took a friend and member here to meet Eric and his helpers, to detox him from methadone. I thought it was snake oil, a scam... I hardly recognized my friend when he got back after his treatment. It took me four years or so after his successful tx to get the material and do it myself - I did not have the money for professional treatment, and was ready by this time to die trying if it came to that. Then about two months after my initial flood, pkeffect opened this forum up and gave me the keys so long as I didn't drive it into the wall (like he did his truck...twice) and the rest is history

i came to iboga through ayahuasca. i began researching/working with it around 98/99....it was through learning of it,that i learned of iboga. i was a sick, sick puppy then...i am the friend cal was refering to above,i was treated in 05 with ibogaine hcl. one treatment was all it took for me...i attribute a lot of this to the fact that i had done a lot of work on myself beforehand with ayahuasca...then the ibogaine stepped in to help out in a way that ayahuasca could not. yes indeed, what a long strange, marvellous trip it has been...and it aint over yet!

Oh so your the guy he was referring to in the podcast and what not, I have always wondered. People don't seem to understand this on the Ayahuasca forum, any ideas how I can break it down for them?  I view Iboga as the emergency solution for severe cases and see that Ayahuasca is better for people that want to improve, grow, learn and for moderate traumas ext.  It is a hard thing to explain to them, and I just can't seem to get the experiential base across to them.  Well as of this past month my new love is the same as my old love, Tabernanthe Iboga.  By the way I am noticing that combining Bioperine drastically reduces ataxia, I have no idea how this could be but so far so good.

Some guy at the methadone clinic was talking about it and was very excited.  This was 2007.  After that I started researching on my own and I also saw and read some things about Dmitri.

I found iboga while I was on methadone back in 2003.  I was very into other entheogen and drug chemistry forums, and was researching entheogens when I stumbled across iboga and Howard Lotsof's story of how it worked for beating opiate addiction.  After speaking with a few online, some on the mindvox ibogaine list, and getting contacted by someone by phone who underwent the experience, I was given Sara Glatt's contact info.  After talking with her, I made arrangements to fly over to Amsterdam and undergo the experience.  I had been stepping down on my methadone dose for a year, and had gotten very low, but I was starting to get the blues at that dose, and knew it was time to go for it.

I first saw it on a film called 2012: A Time for Change. The film also covered ayahuasca.

Great idea for a thread! I first ran across Ibogaine sometime around 2003, after I had started to get into other psychedelics and began researching every one I came across.  I read about it then, on erowid.org, and never forgot it.. Years later, sometime around 2008, after having been addicted to heroin for several years, a family member had just seen the Law and Order episode where it is used and discussed, and brought up the subject at Thanksgiving.  After a long discussion, my family finally decided that they would help me purchase it if I could find it somehow... I then started an almost two-year search for it, that included many website, forums, doctors, underground-providers, even a US Senator - and finally I was led to this forum, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A good friend who knows more about plant medicine than any person I know, suggested I look into iboga. I then found this forum and about 4 months later had my first flood by the same generous friend who helped me get in touch with our teacher. Iboga is now a big part of my life and has helped and will help me be the person I am. I am not there yet, but the layers are being shaved away. Can't wait for the next lesson.

I first heard about Ibogaine on www.erowid.org probably about 5 or 6 years ago. I started working with many different shamanic medicines (Ayahuasca, San Pedro, HWBW, Mushrooms, ect.) about 4 years ago. I have a strong calling to work with shamanic medicines. Eventually I ran across a movie called Manifesting the Mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-IYBIi6kNk After watching that I started doing more research and also watched Bruce Perry doing Iboga with the Bwiti. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6-O9FWKhwU I knew I found a new powerful plant teacher!

WOW what a thread! This month marks my 10 years of when I first learned of Iboga from Daniel Pinchbeck's "Breaking Open the Head."  It was not until one year ago, I did my first flood.

I agree BT - that's for resurrecting it - I had missed this thread. I first heard about it 9 months ago in Peru. A guy where I was staying to take Aya had lived in Gabon for maybe 20 years and had been initiated there. The guy leading the Aya retreat was planning on going to Gabon this year and was saying how intense it would be to have his face painted white and stare into a mirror - the way he described it was kinda scary - at least to me. However, it planted a seed and I started researching as soon as I got home. Seems more like 9 years ago than 9 months so much has changed for me in that time.

About 7 to 8 years ago I played records from Iboga records (psytrance). Back then I knew what Iboga meant, but I don't know how this knowing came to me. Gradually I moved towards more serious psychedelics like San Pedro and Ayahuasca (having been experienced with mushrooms and Salvia for a long time). Then I met this guy who had done several floods already and I seriously started to prepare for Iboga and 2013 was going to be it! And so it is. But... I found out that in the past there have been numerous occasions in which there were subtle hints toward it. Those moments I felt something I couldn't understand and that kept me thinking during all those years. During the flood all those pieces fell into place somehow.

I first heard about it & was some what misinformed by a Hunter S Thompson's book Fear and Loathing: On The Campaign Trail '72 i read in the 1990's but it wasn't until reading Daniel Pinchbeck's "Breaking Open the Head." in 05 or 06 that i really took notice, still i had no real desire to try it till I found myself fighting a hopeless battle with a serious addiction (Again) in 2010 that i decided i needed to do this Iboga thing,it took me another 2 years to get all my ducks in a row & Do it !
