Every ibogaine treatment center listed on Ibogaine.club is evaluated against the same set of medical safety criteria before it appears in our directory. This page explains exactly how that evaluation works, what each criterion measures, and why we weight them the way we do.
Why Safety Scoring Exists
Ibogaine is a powerful plant alkaloid with a well-documented cardiovascular risk profile. It can prolong the QT interval of the heart's electrical cycle, which in rare but serious cases has been associated with fatal arrhythmias, overwhelmingly in settings without adequate cardiac screening and monitoring. A center with no cardiologist on staff and no continuous ECG monitoring is operating a fundamentally different risk profile than one that has both, regardless of how either one markets itself.
Patients researching treatment are often faced with polished marketing and no reliable way to compare the actual medical infrastructure behind it. Our Safety Score exists to make that comparison possible using concrete, verifiable criteria rather than subjective impressions.
The Safety Score Criteria
Each center is evaluated across seven weighted criteria, totaling 100 points. The weighting reflects our view of what most directly affects patient safety during an ibogaine session, based on the clinical consensus that cardiac monitoring is the single most important safeguard, followed by pre-treatment screening and appropriate staffing.
| Criterion | Points | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Cardiologist on staff | 25 | A cardiologist is part of the clinical team, not contracted only for emergencies after the fact. |
| Continuous ECG monitoring | 20 | Cardiac rhythm is monitored continuously throughout the ibogaine session, not spot-checked periodically. |
| Pre-treatment lab tests | 15 | Bloodwork and other lab screening are performed before treatment to rule out contraindications. |
| Psychiatric assessment | 15 | A psychiatric evaluation is conducted before treatment to screen for contraindicated mental health conditions. |
| Staff-to-patient ratio | 10 | Enough qualified staff are present relative to the number of patients being treated concurrently. |
| Emergency protocols | 10 | The facility has documented emergency response protocols and the equipment to act on them (e.g. defibrillator, emergency medications). |
| Post-care program | 5 | Structured support is offered after the acute treatment phase, during the physical and psychological recovery period. |
How We Collect This Information
Safety information is collected directly from each center through our listing and claim process, and is cross-checked where possible against the center's own public materials, direct communication with clinic staff, and, where available, independent patient reviews. Centers that have claimed their listing through our ownership verification process can update this information directly, which is part of why we encourage centers to claim their profile rather than leave it unclaimed.
We do not independently audit medical facilities on-site. The Safety Score reflects what a center has reported and what we have been able to verify through available public and submitted information, not a clinical inspection. We say so plainly here because overstating our own verification process would undermine the exact trust this system is meant to build.
What the Safety Score Is Not
- It is not a guarantee of outcome. No scoring system can predict individual patient response to ibogaine.
- It is not a substitute for your own due diligence. We encourage anyone considering treatment to speak directly with a center's medical staff, ask for documentation of their protocols, and consult an independent physician before travel.
- It is not influenced by advertising or payment. Centers cannot pay to improve their Safety Score. A center's score only changes when the underlying safety information it reports changes.
The "Verified" Badge
Centers marked "Verified" on our directory have gone through our claim and confirmation process, meaning a real representative of the center has confirmed the accuracy of their listing details, including the safety criteria above. An unclaimed listing may still be accurate, but it has not been directly confirmed by the center itself, and we flag that distinction rather than blur it.
Reviewer-Sourced Information
Where a center has enough published reviews, both from our own site and from Google Business Profile, we also surface an AI-assisted summary of recurring themes patients report, shown as separate Benefits and Drawbacks sections on that center's profile page. This is a separate signal from the Safety Score: the Safety Score reflects a center's reported medical infrastructure, while the review summary reflects patients' actual lived experience. We think both matter, and we keep them visually distinct so one is never mistaken for the other.
Questions or Corrections
If you are a patient, family member, or clinician with direct knowledge that a center's safety information is inaccurate, or if you represent a center and want to update your listing, contact us at support@ibogaine.club. Center representatives can also claim their listing directly to manage this information going forward.
Vetting a Provider Yourself
The Safety Score covers what we can verify about a center's reported infrastructure, but it is not a substitute for asking providers direct questions yourself before booking. Our clinic vetting guide walks through the full list of questions to ask about screening, staff, dosing protocol, and emergency readiness, along with the specific red flags that should make you walk away.
