A 49-year-old American man, referred to as "David" in reporting at his family's request, died on May 8, 2022, at Beond Ibogaine in Cancún, Mexico, two days after his ibogaine "flood dose" and shortly after receiving a "booster" dose. He had arrived 11 days earlier to treat dependency on fentanyl, cocaine, Suboxone, and Valium. No autopsy was performed and no official cause of death has been made public; his family was told by phone that he suffered a heart attack and was resuscitated twice before a third resuscitation attempt failed, an account a Beond spokesperson disputes discussing.
David arrived at Beond on April 27, 2022, shortly after Beond opened (March 2022), seeking treatment for a relapse into fentanyl, cocaine, Suboxone, and Valium use following his father's death in August 2021 and a subsequent romantic relationship that his ex-wife says had a destabilizing effect. He had recently inherited several million dollars and told his ex-wife, Sophie (name changed by Rolling Stone to protect his privacy), that he planned to use part of it to help others struggling with addiction.
A former Beond employee told Rolling Stone that David's drug use had been so heavy his IV line needed a catheter because he had injected drugs into so many of his veins. Separately, his ex-wife Sophie told Rolling Stone his drug use had become so reckless that two men were hired to escort him to the clinic. Beond states he received a full screening on admission.
On May 1, 2022, Sophie visited David at Beond; she described him as in good spirits and talking about using part of his inheritance to help others with addiction. David then received his ibogaine "flood dose"; per reporting, his ex-wife spoke with him the day after and he "didn't really have much to say about the experience itself." Two days after the flood dose, he was given a "booster" dose of ibogaine, and died shortly afterward, on Sunday, May 8, 2022.
Per the reporting, Beond's co-founder Tom Feegel told the patient's ex-wife, in a phone call recounted by her, that David died of a heart attack and had been defibrillated twice; a former employee said a third resuscitation attempt was unsuccessful. Beond's then chief medical officer, Dr. Jeffrey Kamlet, reportedly told the family a different account, saying he wasn't exactly sure how David had died. A Beond spokesperson disputed the ex-wife's account of the call with Feegel, saying he "did not discuss medical details." No autopsy was conducted; David was cremated in Cancún.
Through a spokesperson, Beond said: "At Beond our medical team adheres strictly to the established protocols and professional standards. No client is admitted with a do-not-resuscitate order in place... The suggestion that our doctors would do so is baseless and absurd." Beond did not publicly announce David's death at the time, and continued marketing activity in the months that followed.
No official investigation, autopsy, or coroner's finding into David's death has been publicly reported in the sources reviewed.
