Legal Status in Costa Rica
RestrictedIbogaine is not a scheduled narcotic in Costa Rica, but it is not approved for medical/therapeutic use either. On January 27, 2025, the Ministry of Health issued a formal warning that ibogaine and ayahuasca products lack sanitary registration and that facilities offering them for healing must hold a valid health establishment permit. Separately, the government agency IAFA must approve any addiction treatment program under Law No. 8289. We are not aware of any Costa Rica ibogaine retreat holding that approval.
