Any Martial Artist here?
I haven't really since my youth.
hey whats up. i have been studying brazillian jiu jitsu and krav maga for about six years. started training about three weeks after my flood in 05. i am currently working on earning my purple belt...its a long ass road. i love martial arts, and working out.during my treatment a light went off in my head, that made me realize right then that this would play a huge role in my recovery, and life in general. awesome.
I trained several martial arts for a few years as a child, but I only took capoeira into adulthood. I've been playing for 20 years and I couldn't imagine life without it. One of my teachers describes it well as "good food to eat."
I always thought that since I'm such a natural bad ass that it wouldn't be fair for me to train in martial arts, because then I'd be the baddest motherfucker of all time. But upon closer examination I have come to realize that this is all a farce, and that not only am I not a bad ass - I am extremely lazy to boot. This is one of those situations where I would love love love to be IN shape, but getting in shape continually proves too much for my pathological laziness. I am close friends with Achtwan, who I have watched grow tremendously in his recovery - in fact it was he who introduced me to iboga - and the way he embraced the disciplines of martial arts I know has been a keystone in his process. It has made him healthier and happier and not half the grumpy ass that he used to be. Maybe one of these days I'll grow up enough to emulate him - or at least get a grip on this horrible laziness that wants me in my pajamas 24/7....
now for a corny ass cliche, that like so many others is true. "a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" "its not the destination, its the journey" brother you want to be in shape, just not get in shape. your humor always makes me chuckle, and i get it. but an active role in your fittness is part of the whole. if you met your goal of being in shape, what would you do then? stop because you are in shape? its a journey mang! there is no destination per say. ok,too much blue god,mmmm.....losing my train of thought. love ya man.
I never really thought of it that way before...such a simple notion, it's somehow elusive. Hmmm....food for thought brother. Thanks for the links shawnee39 - that looks pretty cool. Is it all to do with weapons? I think if I were to invest time/energy/money in to a discipline that I would look into Krav Maga. It seems to suit my 'needs' from the little I know of it. Heavy duty calisthenics and practical self defense all rolled in to one.
btw, hoping i can put in enough work this year to be damn close,if not worthy of a purple belt by the big 4 0...............another year. hopefully.
Never to late to start up again GD Thanks for sharing achtwan, I've done a little bit BJJ myself and really enjoyed it, but overall I just focussed on escrima. Good luck with the purple belt test! Here's a couple of escrima videos, see if they're your cup of tea Calaquendi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlN9f5bKKIE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cpc2MrDcLe8
It really depends on the individual style or system, but the general rule of thumb is start with weapons and move on to empty hands, but it doesn't always hold true. The basic movement will be the same - thought adjustments will be made whether it's impact weapon, edge weapon, improvised or empty handed. I'd say if you've got a good feeling about KM go for that, another art that might interest you is Systema (Russian)
Thanks shawnee39!
I Used to do kick-boxing. Just bought a punchbag/stand for indoors to practice kicks and punches on it. I might start up classes again, but its pretty expensive and im not as flexible as i used to be.
