What does a truly thorough medical screening actually look like?

I've been researching centers for a while now, and the range of what counts as "medical screening" is honestly all over the place. Some mention EKGs, others talk about full cardiac workups, and a few seem pretty vague about the whole thing. For those of us with trauma histories, psychological screening matters just as much, but that seems even less standardized. I know the research on best practices is still evolving, so I'm curious what others have encountered. What specific tests or assessments did your center require? Did anything surprise you, either because it felt thorough or because something seemed missing?

Hey Maria. Yeah the inconsistency is pretty wild. Most places I’ve looked into do a risk-based medical screen rather than a full workup - history of clots/heart stuff, bloods (CBC, lipids, liver, electrolytes if on spiro), BP, and an EKG if you’re older or have risk factors. Full cardiac eval is rare unless something’s already flagged. Psych side is even messier. Some clinics just confirm you’ve been consistent about it and can consent, others dig into trauma, autism, depression etc. because those rates are high and can complicate things. Trauma history usually doesn’t block you, but the better places at least ask about it properly instead of ignoring it. Did your center actually require any specific psych assessment or was it pretty light?

That's a helpful breakdown, thank you. The center I've been talking to does a structured trauma interview upfront, which felt reassuring, but you're right that it varies wildly. I wish there were clearer standards across the board.
